Caridina Aquarium Shrimp
Caridina Freshwater Shrimp
Caridina shrimp are some of the most sought-after freshwater aquarium shrimp, prized for their incredible colours, patterns, and selective breeding potential. These beautiful dwarf shrimp require more precise water parameters, including soft acidic water, active aquarium soil, and proper mineral balance to thrive. At The Wet Leaf Canada, we provide premium shrimp supplies and aquascaping products to help experienced hobbyists create stable environments for successful Caridina keeping and breeding.
Learn More About Caridina Shrimp Keeping
What are Caridina shrimp?
Caridina shrimp are highly valued freshwater dwarf shrimp known for their striking colours, unique patterns, and popularity among advanced shrimp keepers. Varieties such as Crystal Red Shrimp, Crystal Black Shrimp, and Taiwan Bee shrimp have been selectively bred for generations, creating some of the most beautiful shrimp available in the aquarium hobby.
What water parameters do Caridina shrimp need?
Caridina shrimp require stable, soft, slightly acidic water conditions. Ideal parameters are typically a pH between 6.0–6.8, GH around 4–6 dGH, KH between 0–1 dKH, TDS approximately 80–150 ppm, and temperatures around 18–23°C (64–74°F). Stability is one of the most important factors for long-term success.
Do Caridina shrimp need RO water?
Most successful Caridina keepers use RO or purified water combined with a shrimp-specific remineralizer. Tap water often contains too many dissolved minerals and excess carbonate hardness (KH), making it difficult to maintain the soft acidic conditions Caridina shrimp require.
Why use active aquarium soil for Caridina shrimp?
Active shrimp soils help maintain the lower pH conditions preferred by Caridina shrimp by absorbing carbonates and buffering the water. Products such as ADA Aqua Soil and other shrimp-specific substrates create a stable foundation while also supporting beneficial bacteria and healthy biological processes.
Why are minerals important for Caridina shrimp?
Although Caridina shrimp require soft water, they still need essential minerals such as calcium and magnesium for healthy molts and growth. Shrimp remineralizers help restore important minerals while maintaining the low KH environment needed for successful keeping and breeding.
Why are Caridina shrimp considered more challenging?
Unlike hardy Neocaridina shrimp, Caridina shrimp are less forgiving of sudden changes in water chemistry, temperature, or maintenance routines. Consistent parameters, mature aquariums, quality filtration, and careful maintenance are the keys to creating a thriving colony.
Creating a natural Caridina habitat
A planted aquarium with mosses, driftwood, botanicals, and natural surfaces provides excellent grazing areas for Caridina shrimp. Botanicals encourage biofilm growth and help recreate the natural environments where many shrimp species originate.
What should Caridina shrimp eat?
Caridina shrimp continuously graze on biofilm but benefit from specialized shrimp foods that provide essential nutrients for colour development, growth, and breeding. Fine powdered foods can also support young shrimp and shrimplets during early development.
