    Substrate/ Power Sand

Substrate/ Power Sand - The Wet Leaf

    Power Sand & Base Substrates

Power Sand creates the ideal foundation for healthy planted aquariums by improving water circulation beneath aquarium soil while supplying long-lasting nutrients directly to plant roots. It also provides an ideal environment for beneficial bacteria, helping establish a stable biological ecosystem from the very beginning.

At The Wet Leaf Canada, we carry premium Power Sand and base substrates from trusted brands including ADA and DOOA to help create thriving Nature Aquariums and beautiful planted aquascapes.

Learn More About Power Sand & Base Substrates

    What is Power Sand?

Power Sand is a porous base substrate placed beneath aquarium soil during setup. Made from volcanic stone, it promotes excellent water circulation while supplying long-term nutrients that encourage healthy root development.

    Why is water circulation important?

The coarse structure of Power Sand keeps the lower substrate open, allowing oxygen-rich water to circulate beneath the soil. This helps prevent substrate compaction and supports strong, healthy plant roots over the long term.

    How do beneficial bacteria help?

The porous volcanic rock provides enormous surface area for beneficial bacteria to colonize. These bacteria break down organic waste, recycle nutrients, and help establish the biological balance that every successful planted aquarium depends on.

    Long-lasting nutrients

Power Sand slowly releases organic nutrients that become available to aquatic plants as beneficial bacteria break them down. This provides a steady nutrient source that supports rooted plants such as Cryptocoryne, Echinodorus, and many stem plants.

    Choosing the right size

Choose Power Sand S for aquariums up to 40 cm tall, M for aquariums between 40–60 cm, and L for deeper aquariums over 60 cm. Selecting the correct size helps maintain ideal water circulation throughout the substrate.

    Complete your substrate system

For the best results, combine Power Sand with active aquarium soil, substrate additives, and beneficial bacteria. Together they create a nutrient-rich, biologically active foundation that supports healthier aquatic plants, shrimp, and fish for years to come.
