Tissue Cultured plants
At The Wet Leaf, we’re all about offering aquarium plants that thrive—not just survive. That’s why we’re proud to carry Tropica tissue cultured plants and other lab-grown gems that bring the science and the style to your aquascape.
But what even is a tissue cultured plant, and why might you choose it over traditional bunch or potted options? Let’s break it down.

🧪 Tissue Culture: Grown in a Lab, Built for Success
Tissue cultured plants are grown in sterile, lab-controlled environments from a single plant cell or tiny cutting. They’re supplied in sealed cups—free from algae, snails, pesticides, or any unwanted hitchhikers.
Why hobbyists love them:
- 100% pest-free – no snails, algae, or planaria sneaking in.
- Compact but mighty – lots of tiny, healthy shoots in one cup.
- Great for scaping – especially nano tanks or carpet plants.
- Longer shelf life – when kept sealed and cool, they last longer pre-planting.
Compared to bunch plants (which are often grown emersed and bundled with metal weights) or potted plants (which may have rock wool or substrate that needs removing), tissue cultures are cleaner, lighter, and easier to divide for precise planting.
🌱 How to Plant Tissue Cultured Plants
Step 1: Open the cup and gently rinse off the nutrient gel under cool tap water.
Step 2: Divide the plant into smaller portions—anywhere from 4 to 10 mini clumps depending on the species.
Step 3: Use aquascaping tweezers to plant the portions into your substrate. Space them out a bit to give them room to spread.
Pro tip: The smaller the portions you plant, the faster they’ll fill in—especially for carpeting plants like Monte Carlo or Glossostigma.
🌿 Helping Them Settle In
Tissue cultures are young plants, so they’ll appreciate a little extra TLC as they adjust to submerged life. Here’s how to give them the best start:
- Lighting: Medium to high light is ideal. Tissue cultures are light-hungry babies—don’t leave them in the dark!
- CO₂ injection: Strongly recommended, especially for more delicate or carpeting species.
- Water parameters: Keep things stable. A temperature of 22–28°C, soft to medium-hard water, and a pH around 6.5–7.5 will work well for most species.
- Fertilization: Start dosing liquid ferts right away (especially micros), and consider a nutrient-rich substrate like Tropica Soil for an extra boost.
They may take a couple weeks to fully settle, but once they do—you’ll see fresh growth, vibrant colour, and that lush aquascaping look you’re after.
