In the past we've used real time rates generated by our store and shipping apps, those rates are still there, but we have added a few more! With larger volume plant orders we can offer cheaper shipping rates and absorb some of the shipping cost. What will this mean for our customers? More plants! Cheaper shipping!
As most of our customers know, live plants need to ship fast! Faster than fast! This will ensure top quality plants delivered to your doorstep.
All of our plant shipping rates shown are 100% guaranteed by our DOA policy. We rarely have shipping issues, it works out to less than 1% of our orders. Obviously there still can be delays and the potential for shipping problems is present. Our DOA policy covers that, no worries. Just pick the cheapest rate shown, we'll get you your plants!
We've created regional rates. Shipping from Calgary to Newfoundland is a long way! Express shipping is more expensive than shipping Calgary to British Columbia or Ontario. And honestly, if you're on the east coast we're happy to ship to you, but save yourself a bit of cash and source what you are looking for a bit closer to home if you can.
What are our new rates?
As mentioned above, shipping shorter distances is generally cheeper. We have slightly different rates for different parts of Canada. These rates will only apply to live plants. So if there is anything else in your cart you won't see the plant shipping rate. It is ridiculously expensive to express ship heavy bulky items like aquariums and stone, those items ship by ground for the best rate. If you have plants in your cart only rates suitable for shipping live plants will show up. It would be cheeper to check out twice if you have 20lbs of stone and a couple tissue culture plants.
What are our new rates? Theres a lot! All based amount ordered.
Canada Wide Free shipping on plant orders over $150.00
Other rates for orders over $50, $75, $100. Rates will vary by province and region starting at $10 up to $20. Of course all rates shown are 100% DOA.
We've been shipping plants as a business since 2015 and several years prior as hobbyists. We're confidant that we can maintain our shipping track record and give our customers a bit of a deal on shipping live plants.
Hope everybody has a great weekend!

]]>
As many of our customers already know we have moved. Our first move is almost complete, and then we movie again in about 7 months. We have already skimmed our inventory down to the bare bones. Literally shipping several thousand pounds of stock. We’re fairly certain that the UPS and Canada Post drivers dreaded pick ups at our address. We left some gift cards to keep them happy! However we still have quite a lot of inventory that we would like to not have to move again with our next move. We’ll be offering our 40% off storewide sale again this summer, stay tuned if you like deals! Please note what is available online is what we have. We will not be restocking until after our second move likely late fall... but, keep reading.
Moving forward to after our second move, we’re not sure exactly what The Wet Leaf will look like. We started as a small boutique store back in 2015. With a focus on Bucephalandra and rare plants, because we’re hobistist too and that’s kind of the side of the hobby that we’re interested in. Over the years we added more and more products to our store, created our own brand Nature Aquarium Systems and sourced products that were not available in Canada. There's several business that have started up after us using our blueprint and we’re really stoked about that! It really brings the aquascaping hobby to Canada and we all benefit from that. Keep working hard guys!
On a personal note, there’s one and a half people doing the job of two to three people. As mentioned The Wet Leaf is a hobby turned business that is far too successful! We both have full time careers unrelated to the aquascaping industry and since we’ve started up in 2015 two young children. This creates a lot of late nights and early mornings. A lot of our customers likely received emails and shipping notifications late at night and assumed we were a 24 hour operation! At this time we’re not really sure where the Wet Leaf will be after our second move. We might scale it way back to more of a boutique business or we might sell it and start over differently.
I’d like to finish by thanking all our customers, without you we could have not done any of this! We have been lucky enough to meet some really talented people along the way in Canada and abroad that we may not have met as hobbyists. And I’m proud to say that we have been able to serve the vast majority of our customers well. Keep on scaping folks! Support Canadian business if you can and do your part to drive the hobby in Canada! Customer demand is what brings the products in.
Cheers!
Nicolas

Because Covid 19 is creating poor shipping conditions and that it's also winter, Shipping is restricted to western Canada. We will ship too BC, AB, SK, and MB. No shipping to any other province, that's just a bad idea right now.
Live plants ship Monday and Tuesday. Please have your order in Sunday afternoon for shipping the following week.

January 11 2021
The holiday shipping season has finished! Generally shipping times should be improving. But delays due to COVID 19 are still expected.
We won't have any plant stock for several months. Cold temperatures and expected shipping delays are likely to result in frozen plants. Nobody likes to receive frozen plants! Supply will likely be an issue for several more months anyway.
Happy New Year
Stay safe!

November 17 2020
Again no changes, the pandemic is still here.
Get your Christmas shopping done early if you're planning on ordering online. Normally this time of year is busy for shipping companies, this year it has been very busy with shipping delays expected across Canada.
Our ADA order has been delayed again unfortunately. The BC lower mainland is semi-locked down, getting through the Port of Vancouver has been problematic. Currently we don't have an updated ETA.
We have a UNS order that should arrive to us next week and another UNS order that should be about two weeks behind if everything stays on schedule. Fingers crossed.
Plants - Possibly spring of 2021. Shipping in cold weather with expected delays is a recipe for frozen plants. We really don't like frozen plants, and most of our customers know we won't ship live plants if we think there is a high chance of failure.
Stay safe!

October 15 2020
No big changes to how we are operate at this time. Still not stocking plants, see August 19 below.
Shipping is generally more reliable than it has been for most of the summer. But that will likely change in the coming months.
Due to changes with UPS, our order processing time will be a day longer than normal for packages shipped via UPS. 2-3 business days instead of the usual 1-2 days. Our processing time with other shipping methods remains unaffected.
We have a large ADA order set to arrive at the beginning of November. That's exciting! Hopefully it stays on time, we've been waiting for this order since late spring.
Stay safe!

All equipment, dry goods, and supplies are still shipping Canada wide. Expect shipping to be delayed. And if its not it will be a great surprise on your door step! Generally shipping times are getting better, but this pandemic is far from over. It's getting kinda old in our opinion!
Due to availability of live plants from our main supplier. We have chosen not to stock plants at this time. Unfortunately we only receive a small percentage of what we order. This can't work for us as we are set up to better serve our customers with a huge in stock inventory. This includes 1-2 Grow cups and all potted plants.
We have several outstanding orders for sold out products, Ada, Dooa, Stone, Wood, Tropica Plant Care, and a few others. When product arrives it will be stocked in our store. Check back frequently as some stuff sells out fast and follow our social media for the latest updates.

No new information. Shipping Ontario and east still is delayed, with Canada post seeing the biggest delays. Unfortunately still not suitable for live plants. Everything not perishable is still shipping normally but delayed. Hope everyone is doing well, stay safe!

We're shipping live plants again!
But... It's limited to western Canada specifically. British Columbia Alberta Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Yukon. Our normal shipping policy will apply. Please keep in mind that it is always important to ship live plants reasonably fast and all the more important now with the current world situation.
_______________________________________
March 2020
Hope everyone is doing well. In light of the current world situation there are a few considerations. This will impact how we do business for several weeks possibly months.
The risk of transmission of coronavirus though the mail is low. We have increased basic sanitation measures and continue to monitor the health of our shipping staff.
All of our packages are sent requesting a signature for many of reasons. Biggest reason is that we don't want packages left in community mail boxes or on your door step. It's cold outside! Canada post is no longer getting signatures at your door to reduce transmission of cornavrius though human contact. As we do not allow our packages to be safe dropped you will have to go to your local post office to pick up the package. We expect UPS and Puorlator to do something similar as the situation evolves. Please consider this if you are immunocompromised are in the high risk categorie or in contact with someone who is. In fact we would encourage you not to order at this time.
As this pandemic continues to evolve we expect shipping to be delayed.
Going forward product supply will be an issue as the majority of our plants are shipped to Canada via air transport. And at this time we're not sure how this will effect dry goods.
Stay safe! Wash your hands! Practice social distancing! Self isolate if needed! Listen to what our health authorities are saying, together we can flatten the curve.

Tissue culture plants are becoming more and more popular in the planted tank hobby. There are a many of reasons to use them for your next project. Read on, we'll give you the run down as to why we think they're awesome!
We usually just carry the 1-2 Grow tissue culture cups from Tropica Aquarium Plants. Why? Well generally plant quality is very good, better than most others. And Tropica Aquarium Plants has a North American facility here in Canada. This makes acquiring premium plants very easy for us, with little risk of overseas shipping. With 50 different species to choose from in the Tropica 1-2 Grow line up, most folks should be able to find what they're looking for. Wheather its mosses, carpeting plants or stems. Of course there are still some species like Anubias, Echndorius, and some Cryptcorne that come better as potted plants due to poor suitability as tissue cultured plants. And don't forget Tropica is a huge nursery, they know things like this. *Disclaimer* We are not affiliated with Tropica Aquarium Plants. Just really love the quality and selection available. But that's a totally different blog!
1. All tissue cultured plants are grown in sterile lab conditions. This makes all 1-2 grow cups pest free. Great if you have phobia of snails. And algae free. Now there are a lot of factors that contribute to algae, but tissue culture plants will come with absolutely no algae. This means no competition for nutrients when your plants are adapting to your aquarium. Just nice clean plants ready to go!
2. Plant mass inside a tissue cultured cup is usually a lot more when compared to the same potted species.
Out of the 1-2 grow cup!
Same cup divided into portions. Almost every single time when comparing 1-2 Grow cups to potted plants you will receive more in the 1-2 Grow cup. When comparing the same species.
3. Small shipping volume! Shipping is based on weight and volume. We can ship 4-5 TC cups or 1-2 average sized potted plants. And there's no rock wool weighing the box down with useless shipping weight. In winter we use bigger boxes for added protection for all plants. Shipping cost does go up for winter, but you will get way more bang for your buck with 1-2 Grow cups.
4. Plants in cups ship a better too. The hard plastic cups provide a bit of protection too. Because they are emersed grown out of water, leafs and stems are much tougher.
5. No need to plant right away. 1-2 grow cups can easily sit on your counter for a couple days. Just keep them out of direct sun light and slightly cooler than room temperatures. Of course it's better to plant them sooner than later.
Now some tissue culture cups may not be for everyone. Stem plants and carpeting plants might be hard to get going depending on lighting, substrate, fertilization and experience levels. Heres an old blog post with a few tips on growing plants.
In our opinion the pros out weight the cons, give them a try!
]]>
Once again it's time for our annual winter public service announcement. Many of our customers are likely familiar with this announcement.
*****WINTER IS COMING! LIVE PLANTS WILL FREEZE!!!!*****
We're a bit early this year, but one of the best ways to ensue your plants arrive to you safely is to order before winter hits. We know you're out side scraping the last bits of summer off the sky, not really thinking about your tank. Least that's what we're doing between snow storms here in Calgary.
So if you're thinking about ordering now is the time. Cooler temperatures this time of year is the ideal time for shipping across most of Canada. Until it starts freezing. When more insulation is required box sizes go up, as does the cost of shipping. Cheaper shipping and less chance of damaged plants is a win win in our books!
Also we recommend against ordering live plants on Black Friday. It's cold, couriers and the postal system is bogged down, delivery standards are not met and packages are lost. Risky business when we're dealing in live plants!
As our customers know, we take great care in getting you your plants in the best condition possible. We use insulated boxes, heat packs and recommend the fastest shipping method possible. Or at least a shipping time of less than three days.
Flex delivery from Canada post is a great option. Or UPS access point may also be a good option depending on shipping time to your location. Both services hold your package at a location for you to pick up. This reduces the amount of time your package will be exposed to freezing temperatures.
We have been very successful with this method since we started our business. We've shipped thousands of plants with only a few frozen boxes. Most of the frozen boxes were lost or delayed in shipping. Can't be perfect every time!
We're very adverse to risk. Most of our plants are premium quality, and we believe that you the customer should get top quality plants delivered to your door. We will not gamble with your hard earned money. Simply, it comes down to, we get you your plants or we can't. For this reason we have an all or nothing shipping policy. Play by our rules and we will get you your plants with a 100% DOA guarantee. Our shipping policy changes bit depending on season, so have a look at our shipping policy before ordering.
When we have temperatures lower than -20C in Calgary or at the final destination we will hold your order until the next shipping day. Hopefully the temperature improves. Of course we will send an email to update our affected customers.
As always we're here to help. Please don't hesitate to contact us if you have any questions, especially questions related to winter shipping.

]]>Its a cold snowy day here in Calgary. No work to do on any of our tanks, baby is down for a nap. So why not make a coffee, sit down and blog about something. We get questions about growing plants in our aquariums. More specifically "how do I create a lush aquascape like the one I found on the internet". Well, its not easy but here is a few tips.
Make a goal. Decide if you're a plants first person or if you're more into creatures. Off course you can usually add plants to most aquariums, but some fish might not be compatible with your aquascape or chosen plants. Diggers and snackers! Plants are generally very adaptable but most prefer softer water.
1. Plant heavy at the start. More plants to suck up the excess nutrients released by aquasoils at start up. This will also help reduce algae in your tank and your scape will grow in faster.
2. Light. This can be tricky to balance. Too much and algae issues can happen, not enough and light won't be able to penetrate your water column to the substrate. This is a blog post in itself... Learn about PAR in aquariums, just google it. Our tip, balance the amount of light with nutrients/CO2 and plant requirements. Often if an aquarium is maintained with regular water changes and excess nutrients/CO2, less light will be required for plant growth. Something always limits plant growth, light is your limiting factor with this method.
3. Aquasoil. It comes loaded with nutrients for plants! One of the benefits of aquasoil is its ability to encourage colonization of bacteria with grain size and porosity, reducing anaerobic areas. Another benefit of aquasoil is its ability to hold nutrients (CEC).
4. Fertilizers. In a heavily planted tank, nutrients need to be added. Consider this when balancing your tank. All in one fertilizers are great, there's no need to have several different bottles of nitrogen, potassium or whatever. Deficiencies can be difficult to pin point anyway.
5. CO2! Its part of photosynthesis, should be enough said. Tissue culture plants will adapt to your tank 100x better with injected CO2.
6. Water change. Many algae issues are caused by excess nutrients, specifically ammonia. Depending on your fertilization method up to 50% every week. Balance your aquarium and find out what works best for your tank.
7. Over filter your tank and keep it clean. Lots of water flow to get nutrients, CO2 and O2 to to all areas for the aquarium. Keeps the plants happy and limits algae's ability to get a foot hold. A bigger filter will have lots of beneficial bacteria to keep your tank cycled and stable. 5x -10x turnover of tank volume is enough.
8. Trim stem plants. Once your stem plants are established and growing well, trim close to the substrate and replant the tops. Each trimmed stem will grow an additional stem. Do this several times and your original stem will start to resemble a candelabrum. We suggest trimming low in the aquarium or behind wood or stone out of view, for the best looking bush.
9. Hoard Hardscape. Just can't have enough sticks and stones when the urge to scape hits. Options are nice!
10. Rule of thirds. Same as in many other art forms, we want our aquascape to be visually appealing. This is creating imaginary lines on the front of your aquarium. Or actually draw lines with white board markers. You would get three vertical lines and three horizontal lines, evenly spaced. The lines intersect where you want to create focal points with driftwood, stones, plants etc. This also applies to the bottom of your aquarium as you aquascape front to back.
11. Aquascaping tools. Tweezers are essential when planting small stem plants and carpeting plants, especially if you have smaller tank. Curved scissors are nice for trimming. But unless you have to get into hard to reach areas a small set of utility scissors will do the job. Stainless steel is the preferred metal, it is wet after all! A couple old towels to mop up spills and to protect wood floors is a good idea too.
Sounds like I have to go...
Hope everyone has a great Sunday!

]]>As many of you know, this time of year the best insurance for shipping live plants is fast shipping. Less time spent in transit reduces the chance that plants will be exposed to freezing temperatures. Of course we monitor the weather before shipping and use insulated boxes and heat packs as needed. But this doesn't buy a lot of time, heat packs only last so long and we live in Canada. It can get cold here!
Canada post has been our primary shipper since we started up The Wet Leaf and once everything is sorted out we'll be using them again. This will likely be in the new year. But currently we do not recommend Canada post for live plants. For other items Canada post is an option, if you don't mind waiting.
We have added UPS as an option for shipping! Thats the good news. When choosing a UPS rate pick a shipping method that will take no more than 2-3 days. Remember faster is better for live plants!

Check out Flex Delivery from Canada Post, its free just sign up! Basically they hold your package at the post office for you to pick up. Reducing the chance that plants will be exposed to freezing temperatures. And in many cases you will get your plants faster. We have had great success to date with Flex Delivery.
Also don't forget that when choosing your shipping option that the number of shipping days is business days, weekends aren't included. For example, Expedited parcel will be quoted at 1-7 days for a package to eastern Canada shipped from Calgary. Include the weekend and shipping time is 9 days. Not that great for plants and shrimp, you would most likely receive a block of ice. If you're local, Calgary and area, all shipping methods will take the same amount of time. The cheapest shipping method is alright. For everybody else, to give you a bit of an idea, Express post is generally a good option for BC, AB, SASK, and large urban centres. By large we mean the big citys, Toronto, Vancouver, Edmonton, Montreal, Ottawa, etc. Smaller towns and more remote areas may take longer than the shipping standard. Your likely are aware if you have ordered any thing online in the past. Remember faster is better and you can calculate shipping time here. Our postal code is T3G 4Z7.

2) Burn, if this is a local option.
3) Compost the plants by burying them, but...
Make sure the plants can not be transported by birds or any other kind of animal.
Make sure that the soil from the composting is not used along the edges of waterbodies, as the seeds can survive composting and get into these habitats.
4) Give or Sell your unwanted aquatic plants and animals to other responsible aquarists.
5) If you are unsure, contact local fish stores, aquarium clubs and government agencies for guidance.
Don't
1) Do not dump unwanted plants from water gardens and aquaria into local waterbodies or water that ultimately lead into larger waterbodies. This includes the releasing of fish and other aquarium/water garden animals.
Storm drains and municipal sewer systems ultimately lead back to water bodies and the treatment process may not properly kill aquatic plants.
2) Do not dispose of aquatic plants anywhere birds and animals can pick them up and transport them.
