About Tangerine Tiger Caridina Shrimp Tangerine Tiger Shrimp are a selectively bred orange-coloured form of tiger shrimp, generally identified as Caridina mariae. Their translucent golden-orange bodies display dark tiger-like stripes. Colour intensity and stripe patterns vary naturally. Unlike Crystal Red bee shrimp, tiger shrimp may tolerate a somewhat wider range of water chemistry, though stable conditions are still essential.
Aquarium Setup & Care Keep Tangerine Tigers in a mature, fully cycled aquarium with stable water chemistry, plenty of biofilm, plants, mosses and hiding spaces. Many breeders use soft, low-KH water with buffering aquasoil and remineralized RO/DI water; some established lines are maintained in moderately harder water. Match the conditions in which your shrimp were raised where possible. Use a sponge filter or protected intake, keep ammonia and nitrite at zero, and avoid sudden changes and copper-based medications.
Feeding & Nutrition Breeding Tangerine Tiger Caridina Shrimp In a mature, stable aquarium, Tangerine Tiger Shrimp can reproduce in freshwater. Females carry eggs beneath the abdomen, and the young hatch as miniature shrimp. Established biofilm and dense moss help support shrimplets. Keep a dedicated colony to preserve the orange tiger appearance; crossing tiger shrimp with bee-type Caridina may produce hybrid offspring with unpredictable colours and patterns.
Acclimation & Live Shipping Inspect shrimp promptly upon arrival and acclimate carefully to differences in temperature, pH and mineral content. Gradual acclimation, including drip acclimation when water chemistry differs, helps avoid abrupt changes. Orders are supported by The Wet Leaf's 100% Live Arrival Guarantee, subject to published terms.
Frequently Asked Questions Are Tangerine Tigers the same species as Crystal Red Shrimp? No. Tangerine Tigers are generally identified as Caridina mariae, while Crystal Reds belong to the Caridina cantonensis bee-shrimp group.Do Tangerine Tigers require acidic water? Many do well in soft, slightly acidic water, but some captive-bred lines tolerate moderately higher pH. Stable conditions and matching breeder water are important. Can they breed with bee shrimp? Tiger and bee-type Caridina can be crossed to produce hybrid lines, so keep them separate if you want to maintain a pure Tangerine Tiger colony. Are they suitable for beginners? They can be an approachable tiger-shrimp variety for aquarists who understand cycling, mineral hardness and stable water quality.
