    Bucephalandra

Shop premium Bucephalandra aquarium plants in Canada at The Wet Leaf. These unique aquatic plants are prized by aquascapers for their incredible leaf shapes, iridescent colours, and ability to grow attached to driftwood and rock. Bucephalandra are slow-growing, hardy epiphyte plants perfect for Nature Aquariums, shrimp tanks, and low-maintenance planted aquariums.

Native to the rivers and streams of Borneo, Bucephalandra thrive in stable aquariums with clean water, gentle flow, and moderate lighting. Their creeping rhizomes allow them to attach naturally to hardscape, making them an excellent choice for creating detailed aquascapes with stone, wood, and other aquatic plants.

🌿 Bucephalandra Care Guide & Growing Tips

🌱 Are Bucephalandra hard to grow?

Bucephalandra are considered one of the easier aquarium plants to grow when kept in stable conditions. They are slow-growing, hardy epiphytes that naturally attach to hardscape such as aquarium rocks and driftwood. The rhizome should never be buried, but the plant can also be grown attached to substrate, stone, or wood.

Because of their flexible lighting requirements, Bucephalandra can thrive in shaded areas of the aquarium or under stronger lighting when water quality, nutrients, and CO₂ are properly managed.

    What are Bucephalandra plants?

Bucephalandra are a genus of flowering rheophytes native to Borneo, Indonesia. They grow with a creeping rhizome and are available in many different leaf shapes, sizes, and colours.

A unique feature of many Bucephalandra varieties is their iridescent leaves, which can display blue, purple, red, or metallic colours depending on the species, lighting, and viewing angle.

⚠️ Why is my Bucephalandra melting?

Bucephalandra melting is usually caused by stress rather than the plant itself being difficult. New aquariums with high ammonia levels, excess organic waste, unstable water conditions, or sudden changes in parameters can cause leaves to melt.

Bucephalandra perform best in mature, biologically stable aquariums with clean water and good filtration. After shipping or moving between tanks, providing stable conditions, gentle flow, and proper nutrients helps reduce stress during transition.

🌱 Do Bucephalandra need CO₂ and fertilizer?

Bucephalandra can survive without CO₂ injection and heavy fertilization, making them excellent plants for low-tech aquariums. However, CO₂, complete fertilization, and good water circulation will improve growth, colour development, and resistance to algae.

Growth rates vary between species. Some slower varieties may only produce a new leaf every few weeks, while faster-growing plants can produce multiple leaves per week in ideal conditions.

💡 What lighting do Bucephalandra need?

Bucephalandra are excellent low-light aquarium plants. Moderate lighting is often ideal because their slow growth makes them more vulnerable to algae buildup.

    • Low to moderate lighting is recommended
    • Strong lighting requires excellent maintenance
    • Stable nutrients help prevent algae issues
    • Clean water and regular maintenance are important

🪨 How do you attach Bucephalandra to rock or wood?

Bucephalandra are naturally designed to grow attached to hardscape. They can be attached using aquarium-safe super glue gel, thread, fishing line, or simply wedged between rocks and driftwood.

Always keep the rhizome exposed. Burying the rhizome can cause rot and damage the plant.

How do you bring out Bucephalandra colours?

Many Bucephalandra varieties develop their strongest colours when grown submerged under stable aquarium conditions. New leaves often display the brightest colours, while older leaves may gradually become greener.

Good flow, balanced nutrients, and CO₂ can encourage stronger growth and more vibrant colouration. Popular colourful varieties include Brownie Ghost, Brownie Blue, Silver Powder, Phoenix, Jade, and other collector varieties.

✂️ How do you propagate Bucephalandra?

Bucephalandra can be propagated by dividing the rhizome. Large clumps can be separated into smaller plants, allowing each section more access to light and water flow.

    • Use a sharp tool to divide healthy rhizomes
    • Keep several leaves attached to each section
    • Attach new plants to rock or wood
    • Allow time for slow, healthy growth

    Ideal Bucephalandra Growing Conditions

    • Temperature: approximately 21–26°C
    • Clean, filtered water
    • Moderate water flow
    • Stable, mature aquarium environment
    • GH around 5+ is beneficial
    • CO₂ and fertilizer improve growth and colour

At The Wet Leaf Canada, we offer premium Bucephalandra aquarium plants for aquascapers looking to create natural planted aquariums, shrimp tanks, and detailed Nature Aquarium layouts.
